Advanced Institute
The
Advanced Institute provides rejuvenation, camaraderie, reflection, growth,
and fun for participants. Fellow teachers lead workshops demonstrating
how participants can continue to develop a firm foundation in theory and
practice. The 2002 advanced institute was conducted by Dr. Linda Walker
and was entitled "The Language of a Writing Conference." Teachers
focused on peer and teacher conferencing in the context of writing workshop.
Every session featured writing opportunities as well as an author's chair
for those who seek peer review.
Open Institute
Open Institute is a week long, collaborative
exploration of how writing workshop works in classrooms facilitated by
Teacher-Consultants of the Indiana Writing Project. The Open Institute
is open to and appropriate for all teachers. Past participants have
ranged from kindergarten teachers to high school French instructors.
There is something for everyone.
Fall Retreat
Each fall, the previous Summer Institute participants gather to relax,
socialize, write, and share some stories about ideas they have implemented
in their classrooms. The 2001 retreat was held at the Patchwork Quilt
Country Inn, tucked away in the Crystal Valley heartland of northern Indiana.
Participants will have the chance to relax in the Centennial farm home,
stroll the paths, pause in one of the cozy parlors, reminisce with their
fellow TC's, and explore the written word.
Composition Camp
The Comp Camp is conducted for
two weeks every July in a computer classroom on the campus of Ball State.
Up to twenty students who have completed second through fifth grades participate
in a creative experience writing stories with a close look at the power
of word choice, descriptive 'verbal photographing,' and selective sounds
of speech.

Teachers who have completed the project's summer institute and additional
preparation are available for presentations, workshops, and inservices
for schools or school districts. Just contact Bea Sousa, our inservices
coordinator, and describe your needs. Possiblities include study groups,
portfolios, authentic assessment, writing across the curriculum, process
writing, reading/writing workshops, and the writing portion of ISTEP.
Fellows can contact Bea Sousa at 765-282-9993 or the project's office
at 765-285-8414 if they are interested in offering programs like this.
