THE INDIANA WRITING PROJECT is an organization committed
to promoting the best possible writing instruction in Indiana's
elementary, secondary, and post-secondary schools. The project
is administered through Ball State University's English Department
and funded through the generous support of Ball State, the Indiana
Department of Education, and the National Writing Project. The
Indiana Writing Project, founded on March 6, 1986, was Indiana's
first affiliate of the National Writing Project. Currently there
are five National Writing Project affiliates in Indiana, forming
the Indiana Network.
In 2008, the IWP will offer its
twenty-third Summer Invitational Institute, drawing teachers of writing from
across the state. Teachers at any level who have at least
three years of teaching experience can apply to attend the project's
Summer Institute. The institute is held at Ball State each summer
for four or five weeks. Participants write, research topics in
the teaching of writing, and present to each other successful,
practical teaching techniques.
Participants may choose to work
with CompCamp. Participants earn six
hours of graduate credit and return to their classrooms energized
and able to offer a wider repertoire of writing experiences for
their students.
Participants (or fellows) can then become teacher consultants
able to give workshops and inservices on a variety of topics.
These workshops bring the benefits of the writing project to other
teachers across the state.
The purpose of this website is to describe the project and its
related programs and services. Additionally, this site is designed
to facilitate communication between past participants, prospective
participants, and other teachers of writing throughout the state.
